World chess masters to compete in Longgang

The six masters, Anish Giri from the Netherlands, Michael Adams from the United Kingdom, Pentala Harikrishna from India, Peter Svidler from Russia and two Chinese masters, Yu Yangyi and Ding Liren, will complete for 10 rounds between Thursday and April 2.

Anish Giri won the U12 Russian Championship in 2006 and became the youngest Grandmaster in the world in 2009. Anish Giri has won the Dutch championship four times.

Peter Svidler’s best ranking was No.3 in the world in 2006. Seven-time Russian champion Svidler has represented Russia at the Chess Olympiad 10 times. He won the Chess World Cup 2011 and was runner-up in the World Blitz Championship in 2006.

SIX chess masters from five countries will compete for a top prize of US$20,000 at an invitation competition to be inaugurated in Longgang District on Thursday.

Pentala Harikrishna became the youngest grandmaster from India in 2001. He was World Junior Champion in 2004 and Asian Individual Champion in 2011. He represented India at seven Chess Olympiads from 2000 to 2012.

Yu Yangyi, U10 champion in World Youth Championship 2004, became grandmaster in 2009.

Michael Adams, whose highest ranking is world No. 4, took the silver medal at the World U16 Championship in Innsbruck at 15, becoming the world’s youngest International Master (IM). He won full championship titles in 1989, 1997, 2010, 2011 and 2016.

In August, 2014, Ding became No. 1 player in China. In the 2015 Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Ding tied for second place, the best achievement made by a Chinese player in such a top world tournament. Ding won the gold medal in Olympiad 2014 and gold in World Team Championship 2015.

On the last day of the event, hosted by Longgang District Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau and Shenzhen Pengcheng Chess Club Co., Ltd., each of the six masters will team up with a local entrepreneur to play in a Friendship Match.

Ding Liren, born in Wenzhou in 1992, was the youngest national individual champion in China in 2009. In 2011 and 2012, Ding won National Individual Championships. In 2013, he won third place in the Biel Grandmaster Match.

He won the gold medal in 2014 Olympiad.
